Deer Boy is a story about a hunter’s son,
who was born with antlers, and about how each man
kills the thing he loves.
The director of the film and the screenplay author is Katarzyna Gondek.
The artistic supervisor of this project is Jolanta Dylewska.
ABOUT THE FILM
A hunter's son falls asleep counting the jumping deer. One of them got shot, one bleeds a little, another one limps away from the meadow. And the antlers grow and grow on the boy's head, puncturing the pillow, as they do every night.
"Deer boy" is a horror fairy tale about instincts. About the first hunt. About blood and nature. Parental warmth meshes here with disgust, dreams with reality and childlike sensitivity with the lessons on killing. The film is based on animal sounds not giving a word to the characters trapped in its story. The deer are jumping over the sleeping boy's head. Eventually one of them will have to be killed, now won't he?

We're starting to shot Deer Boy
The idea for this project came as a result of working on „the Romances” (2013) – a short documentary about the hunting rituals, where hunters study the language of their pray in order to kill them more easily. Katarzyna Gondek – film director - explains: After “the Romances” I had a feeling that there is more to the story, that there is something frighteningly real.
I read a book “Paint means blood”, in which Zenon Kruczyński, former hunter, describes his memories of killing animals. I dug this topic deeper by reading, watching but still not knowing what is it that I want to say about this combination of awe and murder; this pleasure of killing. How to open this topic on all of us. Because I have a feeling it is a result of all of us, or at least it sinks into all of us. It has a meaning.  Finally I decided to trust fictional characters. Give a hunter a son with antlers. See what will happen. How will they deal with it? That’s the film.
The film will be starring Janusz Chabior, Katarzyna Sobiszewska, sixteen year old Eryk Maj and seven year old Mieszko Czachor.

“Deer Boy” is a Polish- Belgian co-production. The producer of this film is Centrala, with Poznań Film Commission, Poznań Estrada Fund, Stern Pictures, Alchemiq Studio, Studio Fadando Poland and Bekke Film Belgium as co-producers.
The co-authors of “Deer Boy” are among others Maciej Twardowski (DoP), Jarosław Piekarski (editing, post-production) and Katarzyna Szczerba (sound director).
Jolanta Dylewska is the artistic supervisor of this project.

Deer Boy on the road! We have just come back from Vilnius and now we’re getting ready for Clermont-Ferrand and Berlin!
Recently we had an opportunity to visit Vilnius and the European Short Pitch, where Kasia Gondek, among 20 other script writers, worked on developing the script for Deer Boy. European Short Pitch is an initiative of NISI MASA- the European network of film associations of young professionals, which focuses on supporting short European co-productions
The goal of NISI MASA is to discover new talents in the film industry, to develop intercultural audiovisual projects and to create a platform for discussion and interaction between young film professionals. NISI MASA’s projects are co-financed by the Creative Europe MEDIA sub-programme.
Deer Boy has also qualified to Euro Connection - Short Film Market, which accompanies the International Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand and which is a great opportunity for filmmakers, financiers and distributors from all over Europe to meet. See you on the 9th of February at 13:45 in Holiday Inn Hotel, where Katarzyna Gondek, Ben Vandendaele and Pawel Kosun will talk about the film!
Straight from Clermont-Ferrand Kasia will be going to Berlin to participate in Berlinale Talents - workshops for young filmmakers, organised in association with Berlin International Film Festival.
